goodreads monday

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners. To participate, choose a random book from your TBR and show it off! Check out this week’s post to share your links.

I love this meme! This is another book that only recently found its way onto my TBR, but having it come up when I spun the random number generator made me inspired to get my hands on it all over again!

This Savage Song

23299512Author: Victoria Schwab

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Publication Date: July 5, 2016

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

This duology caught my eye when I stumbled across a review for the second book, Our Dark Duet, earlier this month. Honestly, the words “urban fantasy” are often enough to reel me in, but in this case, it was the descriptions of Kate and August’s characters that made me instantly add This Savage Song to my TBR pile. Their complicated relationship seems like it will be plagued with questions of morality, and I’m all for tricky alliances. I’ve yet to give Victoria Schwab’s writing a shot, but she’s been on my radar plenty lately, and I’m also definitely interested in her Shades of Magic series, too!

Anyone else have some Victoria Schwab books on their TBR?

  1. Can you help me out here please? What does urban fantasy usually involve? I know the Dresden Files is considered urban fantasy (and I am a HUGE fan of those). It is a simple as fantasy that takes place in a city or does it have more layers to it than that?

    1. I associate urban fantasies with taking place in more … recognizable settings, as opposed to, say, high fantasies in totally different universes. They do tend to often come in the form of actual urban environments. While I love the world-building that comes with more involved fantasies, I just have such a soft spot for fantasy layered over the world as we know it! I think it’s a bit of a malleable term, but that’s what it means to me 🙂
