Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Book Quotes

top ten tuesdays

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I’m excited to be participating! A handful of these are go-to’s of mine, but others are recent ones I’ve fallen in love with. I envy those of you that can pull a Top Ten off the top of your head!

Fire and ice don’t really mix. You could say they’re incompatible. But when they do love each other, they love passionately.
– Cornelia Funke, Inkspell

We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway.
– Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

Sometimes you need to scorch everything to the ground, and start over. After the burning the soil is richer, and new things can grow. People are like that, too. They start over. They find a way.
– Celeste Ng, Little Fires Everywhere

I do not want to pass the time. I want to grab hold of it and leave my mark upon the world.
– Libba Bray, The Sweet Far Thing

I had learned early to assume something dark and lethal hidden at the heart of anything I loved. When I couldn’t find it, I responded, bewildered and wary, in the only way I knew how: by planting it there myself.
– Tanya French, In the Woods

The past was a bridge that looked solid and sturdy, but once you were on it, you saw that it extended only far enough to strand you, to suspend you between loss and longing with nowhere to go at all.
– Bret Anthony Johnson, Remember Me Like This

It makes you wonder. All the brilliant things we might have done with our lives if only we suspected we knew how.
– Ann Patchett, Bel Canto

We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.
– Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.
– Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights

“You can’t tell people what to be, I’m afraid,” said Rosie. “You can only love and support who they already are.”
– Laurie Frankel, This Is How It Always Is

Home isn’t a safe place where everything stays the same; it’s a place where you are safe and loved despite nothing staying the same.
– Susan Meissner, As Bright As Heaven

Are any of these familiar to you? I wish I did a better job of jotting down bookish quotes that move me – which is where about half of these come from. The rest are thanks to Goodreads! I’m much better with song lyrics, but that’s not quite the meme, is it? 😉

  1. I don’t keep very good track of book quotes either (most are on my Kindle), but you picked some really great ones. I especially love Rosie’s wise words from This Is How It Always Is and the Little Fires quote. Nice job!

  2. Amazing picks. I honestly could have done a top ten Tuesday of just Leigh Bardugo quotes, I swear. And the Crooked Kingdom one you picked… beyond words. Actually breathtakingly powerful! ❤
